What is Silverpoint, and why do I love to work with this medium?

I first explored drawing with Silverpoint about 30 years ago and recently recalled enjoying that process. This new series is a recent exploration.  As with my other work, I typically do not start with a image concept but just apply hand and tools to the material, let go of the 'idea or goal,' and see where the drawing goes. If you look closely art the imagery in the entire series you will see a drifting
dreamlike (hence "dreamscapes"), exploratory feeling.  I hope you enjoy them!

About the materials

The art of silverpoint is an ancient drawing technique in the form of thin silver wire inserted into a stylus to inscribe fine lines onto a specially prepared, lightly abrasive surface. The marks made by these metals, being initially rather faint, are built up in cross hatched layers to eventually produce subtle values resulting in a delicate image.

There's no going "backwards..." A steady hand and a great deal of patience are required, as the marks cannot be erased and the surface is easily marred. In addition, humidity and air quality over time cause the subtle gray-toned color and density to oxidize and changes to typically a subtly warmer hue. No time frame is specifically stated, but look at the old masters' silverpoint drawings and you will see the warm tones.
